The Steering Committee consists of nine members elected and selected from the greening community and one non-voting member from GreenThumb. The Steering Committee is responsible for adopting a Master Plan for the construction of stormwater abatement measures in our community gardens.

The Great North Garden Group elected Sarah Zaborowski, a valued member of Campos Garden, as their Steering Committee member and Shig Matsukawa, of the Children’s Garden and El Sol Brillante, as their alternate. The Great North Garden Group is made up of twelve gardens on 11th, 12th and 13th Sts. Sarah has an innate sense of our community and our gardens and Shig is a leader in the compost movement.
The El Pueblo Garden Group, which consists of the eight gardens on 7th, 8th and 9th Sts, has elected Shawn Dahl of DeColores Garden to the Steering Committee and Ross Martin of La Plaza Cultural as an alternate.
The Middle Earth Garden Group which represents the nine gardens on 4th, 5th and 6th Sts has elected Carmine D’Intino of 6B Garden as their Steering Committee member and Ayo Harrington of Orchard Alley as their alternative.
The Mundo Verde Garden Group is comprised of the eight gardens on 2nd and 3rd Sts. Herman Hewitt of All People’s Garden was elected and Rev. Laura Cotrich of Peachtree Garden was elected the alternate. Herman serves on the board of the Manhattan Land Trust Garden and is a member of Community Board 3.
The Southland Garden Group consists of ten gardens below Houston Street and west of First Avenue. They elected Kristin Ellington of the Dorothy Strelsin Suffolk St. Garden as their Steering Committee member and Wendy Brawer of Siempre Verde as their alternate.
We are very lucky to have ten such dedicated people from eleven different gardens who have stepped forward to work for the good of the community. They should be congratulated for their public spirit and we look forward to working with them.
On March 8th 2016, the five elected Steering Committee gardeners voted on the additional Steering Committee members as follows:
Tessa Huxley: Former Director of Battery Park City Parks Conservancy.
Brigid Keating: Senior Project Manager of NYC Economic Development Corp.
Jack Linn: Long-serving Assistant Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation.
Ilan Kutok: Director of Green Infrastructure NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation.
Carlos Martinez: Assistant Director, NYC GreenThumb (non voting member).
These nine elected members of the Steering Committee will meet on the first Monday of each month.
